The trip around the world The Korrigane (1934-1936) is in the context of burgeoning ethnographic explorations and discoveries of the inter-war period: navigation solitary Alain Gerbault (1923-1929), “Black Cruise” (1924-1925) and “Yellow Cruise” (1931), Dakar-Djibouti mission (1933). Five people are responsible for chartering the yacht for Korrigane The long journey: Stephen and Monique de Ganay, Charles and Regine Jean van den Broek and Regensburg. Young, rich, adventure-loving, but very informed, they have the scientific backing due to letters of recommendation submitted by Paul Rivet, which then activates the creation of the new Museum of Man. Much of the objects brought back from this trip will be deposited to their dispersion in 1961. This is especially in the Pacific islands and the Indies travelers will linger to discover peoples still little known to Europeans. They collect thousands of ethnographic objects, they are making thousands of photographs and sketches. This material is presented on the occasion of the exhibition of the Museum of Man devoted to shipping, which is the subject of a scientific study in this catalog, following the presentation of the context travel and navigation. The objects collected a wide variety of manufacturers, sculptures in stone or wood, ivory ornaments, jade, pearl and shell, beaten bark fabrics, wooden masks and basketry, objects of daily life and ritual objects, allow to discover the diversity of Pacific cultures: Marquesas, Fiji, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Solomon, Admiralty and New Guinea. The interest that these objects make to the story of Pacific peoples and the history of art in general is the fact that this collection was carried out at a pivotal time, when the ancient traditions of many societies Pacific just beginning to disintegrate under the influence of Christianity
